1.2 million people gathered in the famous Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid to greet Pope Leo XIV as he prepared to celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi on the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Spain.

According to the organizers, the turnout exceeded all expectations leading to safety measures needing to be put in place regarding access to the event.

Celebrating Corpus Christi

The Pontiff is celebrated Mass for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and concluded the ceremonies with a solemn eucharistic procession through the city.

The Feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord and is celebrated with Mass and procession in many cities across the world – including ceremonies closer to home at Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.

The Holy Father’s six-day apostolic journey continues in Spain as he journeys to the Cathedral of Holy Mary of Almudena.
